OUTCOMES & ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Service highlights from the most recently completed fiscal year include:
- Over 50 behavioral health programs targeting every age group from infants to older adults. Henderson Behavioral Health provides a continuum of high quality, community-based prevention, education, treatment and rehabilitation services utilizing best practice and evidence-based treatment models to maximize recovery.
- Over 25,000 individuals served organization-wide at more than 20 locations throughout South Florida.
- 8,259 individuals who experienced a psychiatric crisis received immediate emergency services at our Crisis Walk-In Center.
- 2,132 individuals received immediate on-site assessment, crisis intervention, counseling, linkage, referral and inpatient hospitalization as necessary from our twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year, Emergency Mobile Response Teams.
- 1,188 individuals were screened at our Crisis Stabilization unit (C.S.U).
- 595 individuals representing 6,754 total inpatient days were admitted and received short-term, intensive in-patient treatment and stabilization at our C.S.U.
- Over 700 adults received housing through Henderson’s Housing Services that provide individuals with needed supports to achieve the goal of independent living.
- HBH provides 24 group home beds for boys ages 11 – 18.
- 98% of our clients responded that they were satisfied or very satisfied with the services they received at Henderson.
- 97% responded that they functioned better as a result of receiving services at Henderson.
- On February 28, 2011 HBH implemented a fully integrated Electronic Health Record to help enhance the quality and efficiency of client care.
- During 2012, Henderson Behavioral Health, through Adult Residential Services, will provide Rapid Re-housing Case Managers to serve approximately 1,000 homeless Veterans in Miami-Dade County, in partnership with CARRFOUR Supportive Housing. The program is called Operation Sacred Trust.
Henderson educates the public and professionals:
- The American Safety and Health Institute – as the official training center in Broward County, Henderson Behavioral Health trained 536 mental health providers in important areas such as Domestic Violence, HIV/AIDS and Safety and Security.
- As a participant in more than 30 Community Fairs & similar health-related events, HBH had more than 12,000 visitors to our booths.
- Key “Speaker’s Bureau” personnel spoke to more than 80 different groups reaching more than 5,500 people.
Henderson is a trusted site for national research:
- In January, 2010, Henderson Behavioral Health was selected as one of thirty leading behavioral healthcare organizations from across the United States to participate in a National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) funded research study. Dr. John Kane leads the program at the Zucker Hillside Hospital in New York with colleagues from Dartmouth Medical School, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Yale Medical School, University of Calgary, UCLA, and SUNY Downstate Medical Center. . The study is designed to evaluate the benefits of a comprehensive pharmacological and psychosocial treatment package (the RAISE Enhanced Treatment Program) and is studying individuals with first episode psychosis as compared to customary community mental health treatment.

- In 2006, HBH was selected as one of only 20 sites for the four-year Mental Health Treatment Study, sponsored by the Social Security Administration. Henderson was selected for the study because of its performance excellence in evidence-based supported employment. The study examined the value of eliminating disincentives from the workplace, establishing accurate diagnoses and delivering appropriate mental health and employment supports for all study participants. Outcomes assessed included employment, health and mental status, quality of life, functioning, and clinical recovery. Study participants were selected from Social Security Disability Insurance beneficiaries who had a primary impairment of schizophrenia or affective disorder. Westat, an employee-owned research corporation based in Rockville, MD, led the study, assisted by Dartmouth University, the University of Texas, the University of Maryland at Baltimore County and Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. HBH continues to utilize these best practices to help persons served locate and retain their desired employment.
- In October 2011, Henderson Behavioral Health began participating in a three-year Computerized Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CCBT) study coordinated by the University of South Florida Rothman Center for Neuropsychiatry. The study is evaluating the efficacy of Computerized Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CCBT) for childhood anxiety at community mental health centers similar to HBH.
Henderson Behavioral Health is a recognized community leader:
- Received the highest Level of Accreditation (three years) from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (C.A.R.F); an honor the organization has continuously maintained since 1992.
- On November 30, 2010, Henderson Behavioral Health received the prestigious Federal SAMHSA (The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) Science and Service Award. The award recognized community-based organizations and coalitions that successfully implemented one or more recognized evidence-based interventions. Henderson Behavioral Health was recognized for its Treatment of Mental Illness and Recovery Support Services category, specifically our Youth & Family Connections Case Management program utilizing the "Wraparound" model. Wraparound is a means of delivering unconditional care to children and their families and a process that provides individualized, strength-based, needs-driven planning to meet the complex needs of children involved with multiple systems (e.g. mental health, child welfare, juvenile justice, special education). Wraparound is highly effective in helping the child and their family recognize, utilize, and build talents, assets, and positive capacities.
- Crystal Award as a finalist for the “10th Annual NSU Student Life Achievement Awards – Corporate Partner of the Year.”
- Henderson Behavioral Health has received Gold-Level recognition from the American Heart Association’s Fit Friendly Company continuously since 2010.
- Florida Department of Children and Families and The Florida Alcohol and Drug Abuse Association presented Henderson Mental Health Center’s BRIDGE Project with the “Substance Abuse Services Best Practices Award”.
- Henderson Behavioral Health was the recipient of The Consortium for a Healthier Miami-Dade’s “South Florida Worksite Wellness Award” for mid-sized businesses (those with 500 to 1,000 employees.)
- In 2011 & 2012 employee Trahern LaFavor was awarded the "Sustained Excellence Award" at the MST International Conference. This award was based on outcomes and family ratings of all therapists on a 28-item survey; such as how the family feels the therapist is making changes in their interactions, building on their strengths, etc. The required minimum adherence score 61%. Trahern's level of adherence has consistently been at 75% for over two years.
- In 2012, Bhagi Sahas, MD and HBH Medical Director, and Shari Thomas, LCSW, HBH Director of Youth & Family Services, were honored by the Mental Health Association of Broward County with EPIC Awards, given to those who excel in their work on behalf of persons with a mental illness.
