Summary of Key Outcomes and Accomplishments
Highlights of the most recently completed fiscal year include:
- Over 50 behavioral health programs targeting every age group from infants to the elderly. Henderson Behavioral Health provides a continuum of high quality, community-based prevention, education, treatment and rehabilitation services by utilizing best practice and evidence-based treatment models to maximize recovery.
- Over 21,000 individuals served organization-wide at more than 20 locations throughout Broward County and one location in Lake Worth, Palm Beach County.
- 8,259 individuals who experienced a psychiatric crisis received immediate emergency services at our Crisis Walk-In Center.
- 2,132 individuals received immediate on-site assessment, crisis intervention, counseling, linkage, referral and inpatient hospitalization as necessary from our twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year, Emergency Mobile Response Teams.
- 1,188 individuals were screened at our Crisis Stabilization unit (C.S.U).
- 595 individuals representing 6,754 total inpatient days were admitted and received short-term, intensive in-patient treatment and stabilization at our C.S.U.
- Over 700 adults received housing through Henderson’s Housing Services that provide individuals with needed supports to achieve the goal of independent living.
- 20 boys (11-18 years) who are in the foster care system were housed in one of Henderson’s Group Homes. Each home houses six individuals, and is a long-term program where most youth will reach the age of 18 before moving on to independent living.
- 98% of our clients responded that they were satisfied or very satisfied with the services they received at Henderson.
- 97% responded that they functioned better as a result of receiving services at Henderson.
- The American Safety and Health Institute – as the official training center in Broward County, Henderson Mental Health Center trained 536 mental health providers in important areas such as Domestic Violence, HIV/AIDS and Safety and Security.
- National Research: In January, 2010, Henderson Behavioral Health was selected as one of thirty leading behavioral healthcare organizations, nationally, for participation in a new National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) funded research study. The program is led by Dr. John Kane at the Zucker Hillside Hospital in New York and colleagues from Dartmouth Medical School, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Yale Medical School, University of Calgary, UCLA, and SUNY Downstate Medical Center. . The study is designed to evaluate the benefits of a comprehensive pharmacological and psychosocial treatment package (the RAISE Enhanced Treatment Program) for individuals with first episode psychosis compared to usual community mental health treatment (community care).
- In 2006, HBH was selected as one of only 20 sites for a Mental Health Treatment Study sponsored by the Social Security Administration. Henderson was selected for the study on the basis of its historical performance with evidence-based supported employment. The 4-year study will be concluding in July 2010, and has been examining the value of eliminating disincentives from the workplace, establishing an accurate diagnosis and delivering appropriate mental health and employment supports for study participants. Outcomes being assessed include employment, health and mental status, quality of life, functioning, and clinical recovery. Study participants were selected from Social Security Disability Insurance beneficiaries and have a primary impairment of schizophrenia or affective disorder. Westat, an employee-owned research corporation based in Rockville, MD, is conducting the study along with Dartmouth University, the University of Texas, the University of Maryland at Baltimore County and Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.
- In October 2011, Henderson Behavioral Health is participating in a three year Computerized Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CCBT) study coordinated by the University of South Florida Rothman Center for Neuropsychiatry. The study is designed to evaluate the efficacy of providing computerized Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for childhood anxiety at community mental health centers.
Henderson Behavioral Health received recognition from several different sources, including:
* Received the highest Level of Accreditation: (three years) from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (C.A.R.F).
* Henderson Behavioral Health Receives Prestigious Federal SAMHSA (The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) Science and Service Award
Fort Lauderdale, Florida (November 30, 2010) - Henderson Mental Health Center, south Florida's oldest and largest not-for-profit behavioral healthcare system, was awarded SAMHSA's distinguished Science and Service Award. This award is designed to recognize community-based organizations and coalitions that successfully have implemented one or more recognized evidence-based interventions. Henderson Mental Health Center achieved this prestigious award in the Treatment of Mental Illness and Recovery Support Services category for its Youth & Family "Wraparound" Program. To be eligible for a Science and Service Award, an organization must successfully have implemented a recognized evidence-based intervention. Wraparound is a means of delivering unconditional care to children and their families. It is a process that provides individualized, strength-based, needs-driven planning to meet the complex needs of children involved with multiple systems (e.g. mental health, child welfare, juvenile justice, special education). Wraparound is effective in helping the child and family to recognize, utilize, and build talents, assets, and positive capacities.
* Crystal Award as a finalist for the “10th Annual NSU Student Life Achievement Awards – Corporate Partner of the Year”.
* Henderson Behavioral Health received the Gold recognition for the American Heart Association’s Fit Friendly Company award.
* Florida Department of Children and Families and The Florida Alcohol and Drug Abuse Association presented Henderson Mental Health Center’s BRIDGE Project with the “Substance Abuse Services Best Practices Award”.
* Henderson Behavioral Health was the recipient of The Consortium for a Healthier Miami-Dade, second annual “2010 South Florida Worksite Wellness Forum and Award” in the mid-sized category winner – businesses with 500 to 1,000 employees.
* Trahern LaFavor was awarded the "Sustained Excellence Award" at the MST International Conference. This award is based on outcomes. The family was asked to rate the therapist on 28 items, including how the family feels the therapist is making changes in their interactions, building on their strengths, etc. The required minimum adherence score 61%. Trahern's level of adherence has consistently been at 75% for over one year.
* Dean Mynks, Henderson’s Director of Case Management, was honored by the Mental Health Association of Broward County as an EPIC Award recipient for his work on behalf of adults with a mental illness.
